Harbor City Brewing Company
The Harbor City Brewing Company is located in Port Washington, Wisconsin, in a former ice cube / block ice production plant. To convert this former plant into a quality-conscious microbrewery, they worked closely with the New Belgium Brewing Company of Ft. Collins, CO. They’re the creators of Fat Tire Amber Ale. To create a highly controlled brewing facility, they setup their 20-barrel Brewhouse with four 40-barrel fermentation vessels.
The owner of the New Belgium Brewing Company, Jeff Lebesch, and Harbor City Brewing Company’s brewer, Jim Schueller, worked together to design all of their beers, including the two beers we are featuring this month. The Harbor City Brewing Company’s labels and promotional items feature scenes that are familiar to generations of travelers. Their harbor's Lighthouse and the Downtown are some of the most photographed scenes by tourists.

The Mile Rock Amber Ale is a well-balanced American style amber ale that is true to style. Mile Rock Amber Ale is reminiscent of the beers that were first brewed in this area of Wisconsin back in the 1840’s. Our panel members detected a sweet, malty nose with floral notes. The flavor matched the aroma, with sweet, malty characteristics and the finish was well balanced.

Harbor City's Harvest Wheat Beer is characteristic of traditional filtered Belgian wit beer or white ale. Orange Blossom Honey has been added to this handcrafted brew along with select Belgian wheat malt, coriander and orange peel to give this enjoyable honey wheat beer a refreshing citric finish. It is light in body, slightly tart and profoundly refreshing!
Left Hand Brewing Company
The Left Hand Brewing Company merged with Tabernash Brewing Company on April 1, 1998. The breweries combined to become one of Colorado's ten largest craft brewers, as well as, one of its most recognized and awarded makers of quality ales, lagers and weiss beers. When the two breweries merged, they stayed in the original 2.5 acre location of the Left Hand Brewing Company, in Longmont, Colorado.
In spring of 1998, an additional 7,000 square feet were added to the original 6,000 square foot brewhouse, fermentation, and conditioning facility. This extra space was added to accommodate 12 new fermentation vessels, 2 new beer tanks, a brand new bottling line, labeler, new cooler storage for finished product, as well as space for keg cleaning and filling, storage of packaging materials and office space for the central administrative functions of the brewery. A new four station keg cleaner and filler was added to the brewery in December 1999, providing for a more efficient cleaning and filling operation. This new brewhouse is capable of producing up to 20,000 barrels annually.
Left Hand Brewing Company's original product line consisted of four year-round beers: Sawtooth Ale, Black Jack Porter, Juju Ginger Ale and Motherlode Golden Ale. The current Left Hand product line consists of Sawtooth Ale, Jackman's American Pale Ale (introduced in 1997), Black Jack Porter and Deep Cover Brown Ale, all in six packs and kegs. Their other beers include Juju Ginger Ale, Imperial Stout and the seasonal XXXmas Ale in kegs and 22 oz. bombers.
The now larger and more comfortable tasting room enables visitors to relax and sample the wide variety of award-winning ales, lagers and weiss beers produced on site, while perusing the wide variety of merchandise available for purchase. The tasting room is open to the public from 12:00 - 6:00 Monday through Friday, and 10:00 - 5:00 on Saturday. Tours of the brewery are available on Saturday, 10:00 - 5:00 or weekdays by appointment. The brewery is closed on Sunday.

The Black Jack Porter is a traditional London style beer with plenty of chocolate malt and Kent Goldings hops. It has won gold medals in the Brown Porter and Robust Porter categories at the Great American Beer Festival , in 1995 and 2000, along with a Bronze medal in the Traditional Porter category, in 1994. This is a well-balanced porter, with a slight sweetness at the start. But this beer quickly changes to a distinctive chocolate malt roastiness at the finish.

Jackman’s Pale Ale is a very true to style American Pale Ale. They use the highest quality hops, grown in the US, to produce a beer with plenty of hop aroma and flavor. It is a medium-bodied Pale Ale that is very smooth, creamy, and rich with a very noticeable hop bitterness that is contrasted by spicy and floral characteristics. It is clear, with a bright orange / amber color. There is lots of malt flavor, which add toasted and light caramel flavors to this Pale Ale.
Ask Murl
Dear Murl,
When you talk, do you look more like Mr. Ed or that pig that was just nominated for all those Oscars?
Mike Baier
Brea, CA
Dear Mike,
Let’s get one thing straight here bucko. Talking is for wimps. It’s highly over-rated and generally what gets you human-types into all of the troubles that us higher-intellect canine types tactfully avoid by creating a facade of simple-mindedness. Sure, talking in public allowed those two you mentioned to reach a pinnacle of fame I’ll never see, but where are they now? Big Ed’s either Purina Dog Chow or being used to assemble model airplanes. Rumor has it that Babe has used his newfound wealth to develop several highly addictive substance abusive habits. No thanks man. I’m strictly a barking (and typing upon inspired moments) kind of pooch as far as you know.
Woof!
Murl.
Food For Thought...
Jackman Pale Smokey Salmon
- 2 lbs. salmon fillets with skin, rinsed
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups Jackman’s Pale Ale
- ½ cup coarse or kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon dried dill
- ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 3 lightly cracked black peppercorns
- 1 bay leaf
Heat water and beer to boiling, add salt, dill, sugar, peppercorns, and bay leaf, stirring until the sugar and salt are dissolved. Simmer 25 minutes. Allow brine to cool to room temperature. Pour over salmon and weigh fish down with a saucer. The fish should be completely immersed in brine. Refrigerate 4-6 hours. With cold water, lightly rinse brine from fish but do not remove all of it. To dry, thread a loop of dental floss through one end of the fillet and hang in a well-ventilated area or lay on a cooling rack elevated on 4 cans placed in front of a fan for 4 to 8 hours. The fish will acquire a glossy veneer (called pelz) that is dry to the touch. Heat smoker to low and add wood chips. Smoke the fish slowly, checking occasionally. For moist fish with a hint of smokiness, the time will be relatively short. If you like dry and smoky, allow a longer smoking time.
