Penn’s most award winning beer, Penn Weizen has garnered a mountain of accolades, including being named National Grand Champion at the United Stated Beer Tasting Championship six years in a row from 2002-2007. In 2004, it was rated “exceptional” at the World Beer Championship and awarded a gold medal (one of only two beers to earn such an honor in the Hefe Weizen category; the other was the famed Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, considered by many to be the finest Hefeweizen in the world). Look for this unfiltered brew to pour very hazy, along with a voluminous head (characteristic of the hefeweizen style). The aroma will make you think this brew was made in Germany, as the nose on this beer is spot-on for the style. Look for prominent notes of banana, spicy cloves, and a yeasty bubble gum note. On the palate, the banana and clove notes are a bit more mild, with the banana note lending more of a fresh-baked banana bread character. The effervescent carbonation when paired with the light tart zing from the wheat leaves the palate clean and well-prepared for another sip. We found it an excellent accompaniment to some spicy scallops. Enjoy!

Pennsylvania Brewing Company founder Tom Pastorius developed a taste for real, authentic beer during his service with the U.S. Army in Germany.  After coming back to the U.S. and earning a Master of Business Administration degree at Penn State University, he returned to Germany where he lived for some time in the ‘70s, incorporating beer into his diet just like the Germans for whom beer has been as much a staple as bread for hundreds of years.  Many an American has come home from living in Germany only to be sadly disappointed by the bland, poor quality, rice- and corn-laden products commonly referred to as “beer” here in the States, and that’s exactly what happened to Tom when he returned to the U.S. in 1981.  “Beer tastes better over there.  I just missed the beer…,” he recalls.

His thirst unsatisfied by the commercially available beer choices, and in need of work, Tom made the bold decision to start a brewery.  In 1986 he bought an abandoned brick and stone brewhouse for $225,000, and launched a laborious $4 million, 3-year restoration project on the nearly 150-year-old building.  Tom’s focus for the new-found Pennsylvania Brewing Company was to brew traditional, authentic German-style beers using German-sourced ingredients and equipment, and he’s been wildly successful.  These days he’s considered a true pioneer in the microbrewing revolution.
