This Month's Two Featured Beers:

Perennial Artisan Ales - Funky Wit

Perennial Artisan Ales - Funky Wit (Club Exclusive)

[Oak Foeder-Aged Mixed-Fermentation Witbier - 5% ABV] Since their founding 2011, Perennial has made waves in the craft beer world with their world-class small-batch brews. This month we're excited to bring our members their Funky Wit, which has been released only a couple of times before in very small amounts (the most recent release being just 70 cases across 12 states). We're thrilled to have worked with Perennial to bring Funky Wit back—this time as an exclusive release of The Rare Beer Club available only to club members, save for a small amount at Perennial's St. Louis tasting room. Funky Wit begins as a traditional Belgian-style Witbier, with additions of sweet orange peel, coriander, and black pepper, and a primary fermentation in stainless steel with a classic yeast strain. It's then inoculated with a house blend of Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, and Pediococcus, and left to age in oak foeders for at least a year. After bottle conditioning, the resulting beer displays a soft yet bright sour acidity, which livens up the gentle coriander spicing and the sweet coconut and vanilla tones of the oak.

Brasserie de Jandrain-Jandrenouille - III Gravity Special

Brasserie de Jandrain-Jandrenouille - III Gravity Special (Club Exclusive)

[Belgian Strong Ale dry-hopped with Sorachi Ace - 7.5% ABV] Brasserie de Jandrain-Jandrenouille is a tiny farmhouse brewery located southeast of Brussels, Belgium, and we've been very impressed by their handcrafted beers since their founding in 2006. This month's selection, III Gravity Special, is based on the brewery's original III Gravity which has been produced in small quantities previously, but this Special version is a brand-new one-off created just for members of The Rare Beer Club. While the 16° plato original gravity remains the same as the original, other aspects are unique, including the aroma hops used late in the boil and during dry-hopping, with the Special version boasting large amounts of Sorachi Ace. We're excited to have had a chance to work with the brewers to produce this batch of III Gravity Special for distribution exclusively through The Rare Beer Club (and a small amount which will be available at the brewery's tasting room in Belgium).

Limited-Release and Exclusive Beers

All of our selections are presented in 750 ml bottles; most are also cork finished and wire caged. We often help introduce products to the US market so you'll be the first to try them. You’ll also get beers brewed exclusively for our members, like Jolly Pumpkin’s Lupulo de Hielo, an oak-aged spiced blended ale.

Members receive two different beers in each shipment. We strive to offer variety between those two beers as well as from month to month in terms of both style and country of origin, so rest assured that both US craft brewers as well as world-class international breweries will be represented.

Barrels, Brett and Innovative Ingredients

We work with breweries like Belgium's Fantôme, where brewer Dany Prignon continues to dazzle the world of craft beer with products like Fantôme Chocolat, a Belgian saison brewed with cocoa powder and chili pepper. Many of our featured beers are aged in French oak, bourbon, or even cedar barrels and are brewed with brettanomyces and other wild yeasts.

Selections You Can Age

Many selections will offer high enough hop acidities and ABVs to allow them to be laid down and aged. Members can easily reorder their favorite selections, set them aside, and see how they've matured in months and even years to come.

Logsdon Farmhouse Ales - Rakau Boy

Logsdon Farmhouse Ales - Rakau Boy (Club Exclusive)

[Dry-Hopped Witbier refermented w/ Logsdon’s house Brettanomyces yeast - 7% ABV] Logsdon’s Rakau Boy is being made exclusively for The Rare Beer Club, and the only places folks will have a chance to get this are through the club or at the brewery’s tasting room, as they’ll have a small amount available for their supportive locals. Rakau Boy is best described as a non-traditional, Belgian-style witbier—first fermented with Logsdon’s blend of witbier yeasts, but dry-hopped with Rakau hops and refermented with the brewery’s house strain of Brettanomyces.. The brewing process for the beer begins with a lengthy, low-temperature mash...

Brasserie De La Senne - Bruxellensis

Brasserie De La Senne - Bruxellensis

[Belgian Ale Bottle-Conditioned w/ Brettanomyces - 6.5% ABV] This limited release from De La Senne is pretty much exactly what fans of this great Belgian brewery might be hoping for, combining delicious elements of Brettanomyces with that firmly bitter profile this brewery is known for. Only about 60 cases of this beer have made it to the U.S. thus far this year, such that Rare Beer Club members will have an opportunity to check out a De La Senne offering that won’t see much further availability. So much of the character here comes via influences of the Brettanomyces yeast from Brussels...

Elevation Beer Company - Red Wine Barrel Aged Apis IV

[Quadrupel w/ Honey aged in Cabernet Sauvignon oak barrels - 10% ABV] This is only the second time that Elevation has ever made this beer, and who knows when it will come around again. Aside from the allocation for our Rare Beer Club members, the only public availability of the Red Wine Barrel Aged Apis IV will be about 140 cases sprinkled to select areas in Colorado. We’ve been loving these higher-ABV beers that Elevation has been producing, and this combination of a rich, honeyed quadrupel with the tannins and vanilla-minded contributions from the time spent in oak barrels is just exceptional...

Weyerbacher Brewing Company - Tiny

Weyerbacher Brewing Company - Tiny

[Belgian-Style Imperial Stout - 11.8% ABV] This Belgian-style imperial stout is one of our very favorite Weyerbacher beers: an immense, carefully executed beer that satisfies as both a Belgian-style standout (emphasizing its Abbey yeast strain) and a generous display of everything that we’re looking for from a big imperial stout. For fans of Weyerbacher’s highly regarded Double Simcoe IPA and Imperial Pumpkin Ale (the brewery makes an exceptional one), Tiny offers another massively dense home run. Tiny pours an especially dark, inky-black core with chocolate-brown edges, and there’s just a touch of added viscosity...

De Proef Brouwerij & Surly Brewing Co. - Zwart Black Star

[Old Ale w/ Star Anise aged on wood w/ Brettanomyces - 8% ABV] De Proef Brouwerij's collaborative old ale with Surly Brewing Co. is a one-time release in De Proef’s ongoing Brewmaster’s Collaboration series. Zwart Black Star employs a vibrant old ale as its base, using contributions from star anise and aging the beer on sassafras wood with Brettanomyces to create something completely unique for this series. As we have often been able to do with this release series in the past, we’ve managed to secure allocation of Zwart Black Star early in the process, and Rare Beer Club members will be...

Libertine Brewing Company - Aubree

Libertine Brewing Company - Aubree

[Blended Rye Saison fermented & aged in French Oak Barrels - 6% ABV] Libertine Brewing Co.’s wild ales are among the best we’ve ever experienced from the U.S., with layered tartness and precise blending, and we couldn’t possibly pick a better beer from this brewery to start with than the expressive Aubree. This rye saison, like all of Libertine’s wild ales, gets exposed to the local yeast and bacteria through an overnight stay within the brewery’s coolship, which introduces a complex melange of microflora that ultimately helps contribute all sort of nuances to the final product...

Brouwerij Rodenbach - Vintage 2015

[Flanders Red Ale aged in Oak Foeders - 7% ABV] Rodenbach's latest limited-production vintage offering is exquisite, and stands as a clear reminder of just how good their Grand Cru is. Each Vintage release is from a single foeder that has passed brewmaster Rudi Ghequire’s stringent selection process, aged at least two years in 4,000-gallon oak casks. Every example is unique, unblended, and labeled with the number of the specific foeder in which it was aged (#195 in 2015). Its vintage year indicates the start of its maturation. This world-class example from West Flanders...

Pasteur Street Brewing Company - Cyclo Stout

Pasteur Street Brewing Company - Cyclo Stout

[Imperial Stout w/ Vietnamese Cinnamon, Vanilla & Chocolate - 13% ABV] Vietnam’s Pasteur Street Brewing just recently landed on our radar, and their massive Cyclo Stout seemed a perfect offering to introduce to our RBC members. Pasteur Street focuses on bringing U.S. craft-brewing techniques (and hops!) together with European malts and special additions like (in this case) cinnamon, vanilla, and Marou Chocolate cacao pods—all sourced in Vietnam. As you’d expect from a 13% imperial stout, this pours mostly pitch black, thinning to darker caramel at the edges and...
