This is the most aggressively hot chili-infused beer any of us have ever experienced. It\u2019s polarizing, and we\u2019ve got quite a bit to say about it.<\/p>\n<p>Crime began as a batch of Lukcy Basartd (yes, that\u2019s how it\u2019s spelled), which is an excellent blend of Arrogant Bastard, Oaked Arrogant Bastard, and Double Bastard. Aged in bourbon barrels, the beer then received a mammoth dosing of some of the world\u2019s hottest chili peppers. Their website lists the following: \u201cred and green jalape\u00f1o, Fatali, Caribbean Red Hot, habanero, Ghost, Black Naga, Super, Moruga Scorpion, 7 Pot, Aji Amarillo, Scorpion, Giant White Habanero, 7 Pot Douglah and Douglah peppers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re big fans of Stone, and we\u2019re actually very fond of chili pepper heat in some beers (generally beers made with chocolaty malts and\/or cocoa nibs). But what about this one? Does\u00a0adding an insane amount of hot peppers to Lukcy Basartd actually work?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-709 alignleft\" alt=\"Jan 30, 2014 - Crime (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-2-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-2-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a> Umm, that depends.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s address the heat. It\u2019s very high, but not crazy. If you\u2019re into hot food, the heat here is manageable. But it is very strong, and it does linger. It\u2019s the only beer where you might actually want a chaser of cool water or milk. But since we\u2019re macho we didn\u2019t use anything like that.<\/p>\n<p>Now for the flavor. It\u2019s unlike anything else. There\u2019s a sweet, malty undertone, a little fruit, hints of bourbon, some booziness, and a big dose of chili pepper flavor running over the whole thing in a flaming chariot. I don\u2019t just mean heat \u2013 that\u2019s there too of course \u2013 but vegetal, peppery flavor from the stunning mix of exotic pain-inducing fruits. Hop bitterness is 102 IBUs, but who can tell? The brain short circuits so fast trying to deal with the heat and the alien flavor combinations that there are no neurons left to evaluate the hop contribution.<\/p>\n<p>Did I like this beer? No \u2013 I wanted to, but\u2026 no, it\u2019s just not working for me. At all. I gotta keep it real. Yet\u00a0I\u00a0enjoyed the experience of trying it; in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-712\" alt=\"Jan 30, 2014 - Crime (10)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-10-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-10-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-10-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>fact, I was amused by it. I\u2019ll hold off on judging whether this level of heat is too much for a beer \u2013 I think it\u00a0is, but I can\u2019t be sure. I just don\u2019t think the flavor combinations work here at all. The large mix of spicy, vegetal\u00a0pepper flavors is perhaps too complex to be appealing, and just doesn\u2019t play well with the underlying bourbon barrel aged mix of \u201cBastards\u201d that is the beer\u2019s core. But I\u2019m just one opinion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">David liked Crime much better than I, although he said he wouldn\u2019t want the whole bottle to himself, and I think that hits the key point with this beer: <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Try it with friends<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">. I think it\u2019s worth the experience. It will spur conversation and debate. It\u2019s fun. It\u2019s intense. It\u2019s unique. And you might even like it \u2013 it does have a very fresh, fleshy, hot, and complex pepper flavor profile going for it. But it\u2019s a pricey beer, so splitting the cost with two or three other people brings the cost of trying it down to earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-715 alignleft\" alt=\"Jan 30, 2014 - Crime\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.beermonthclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jan-30-2014-Crime-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>While it got mixed reviews from our staff, we all liked the novelty of it. Is it ahead of its time? A niche product? A crazy gimmick? A crime? You decide. But I will say cheers to Stone for having the guts to produce a beer like this.
