Adelbert’s Brewery, The Rare Beer Club® and Pints for Prostates Partner to Reach Men Through the Universal Language of Beer

September 1, 2015 by Kris Calef

RBC LogoCharlotte, N.C. – Adelbert’s Brewery of Austin, Texas, and The Rare Beer Club®, which ships unique craft beers nationwide, are teaming up to benefit the Pints for Prostates campaign.

Adelbert’s is releasing specially labeled bottles of Scratchin’ Hippo to create awareness and support the mission of Pints for Prostates, which uses the universal language of beer to reach men with an important health message. This award winning Bière de Garde will feature a limited edition label with the Pints for Prostates logo exclusively available through The Rare Beer Club.

Scratchin’ Hippo is a 6.9 percent alcohol by volume traditional, rustic artisanal French-style farmhouse ale. Its complex malt-driven flavor elicits notes of toasted caramel, roasted malts and cocoa, complimented by a mild sweetness.

adelberts-scratchin-hippo“Scratchin’ Hippo is one of our most popular and unique beers. It is named for a massive hippo in Kenya that decided one night to scratch itself by rubbing up against the house where my brother Del, the namesake of the brewery, was living. He thought it was an earthquake,” said Scott Hovey, Founder and Brewmaster of Adelbert’s Brewery. “We are happy to partner with Pints for Prostates and the Rare Beer of the Month Club on this project to help raise awareness about prostate cancer.”

The limited edition label features the Pints for Prostates logo, which includes the blue ribbon to remind people of the ongoing search for a cure to prostate cancer, a leading cause of death among American men. A donation for every 750 milliliter bottle of Adelbert’s Scratchin’ Hippo sold through The Rare Beer Club will be made to Pints for Prostates.

“The annual release of a special beer through The Rare Beer of the Month Club helps us to connect with guys and urge them to take charge of their health by getting screened for prostate cancer,” said Rick Lyke, a prostate cancer survivor who founded Pints for Prostates after successful prostate cancer surgery in April 2008. “We are extremely grateful to Adelbert’s and The Rare Beer of the Month Club for helping us to achieve our mission.”

“This is the sixth year The Rare Beer Club® has partnered with Pints for Prostates on this project and we’re always pleased to do so as it’s a great cause and our members really look forward to a unique beer each year. Adelbert’s is a great craft brewery that we’ve only worked with one other time in 20 years, so we’re really excited to be working with them again,” said President Kris Calef. “Together with the brewery, we’ll donate $1.00 for every bottle sold and include a Pints for Prostates information card in each shipment to remind our members to get tested. A little education and early detection goes a long way to save lives.”

To get the specially labeled version of Scratchin’ Hippo join The Rare Beer Club online or call 800-625-8238 and be sure to start your membership in September. .

According to the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer will claim the lives of nearly 30,000 men in the U.S. during 2015. Prostates cancer is 33 percent more common in men than breast cancer is in women, yet few men know they should get a prostate health screening at age 40. The release is part of the Pints for Prostates Oktoberfest for a Cure observance that is taking place from August through October.

They Are Women, Hear Them Roar

March 8, 2015 by Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club

Women & BeerEquality for women in the work force is stronger than ever, but don’t tell that to the beer industry which has been male dominated  for hundreds of years and remains so today.  However, things are changing fast and by the hand of the minority.  In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8th, the non-profit organization Pink Boots Society will be throwing their second annual International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day (IWCBD) with over 80 participants from 11 different countries.  This year’s style to be mastered – Unite Red Ale.  Following the event, over 80 versions of the beer will be released so that fans and supporters around the world can not only try the brew, but join in the cause of supporting women in the beer industry.

To that my friends, I say Cheers!

Craft Beer in Cans?

August 15, 2014 by Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club

Heady TopperSome of the best beers in the world are only available in cans, such as Heady Topper.  So the perception that cans are only for crappy macro-lager is as outdated as the perception that American beer is only crappy macro-lager. Many experts say that canning can help the beer in many ways by protecting it from light, provide an air tight seal, and make it easier for transport just to name a few. But does it affect taste? Many experts say that the can itself won’t affect the taste unless you drink from the can itself but as most brewers and experts agree, you should always pour your tasty brew into a glass regardless of the packaging.

For us, the most compelling reason to go with cans is that it will open up more breweries for us to feature, because some breweries do not bottle their beer at all – they only use cans.

What is your take on cans?

A Trip to Bottle Logic’s Tasting Room Will Not Disappoint

June 10, 2014 by Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club

double_actuator_heroSo if you’re a fan of sci-fi comics and great craft beer, let me tell you about a brewery right here in our own Orange County backyard. They go by the handle of Bottle Logic and these guys are no strangers to craft beer, constantly pushing the envelope of innovation.

At the helm is Head Brewer Kyle Manns, who, after having his home brew recipe go on to the Great American Beer Festival Pro Am with The Bruery, officially started his brewing career as an assistant brewer at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse.  Over the next 3 years, he went on to help win 9 Medals and back to back Brew Pub Group of the Year awards. Kyle has modeled his brewing after an old music industry mantra, that of “less is more”.

The first beer that caught my eye was Double Actuator, a rock solid DIPA in my opinion. Weighing in at 10%, it’s generously dry hopped with Mosaic hops and offers a fruity flavor profile that hints of blueberries, mangos, and papaya.

The next time you’re in Anaheim, you definitely need to check Bottle Logic’s tasting room. Between the tasty suds and cool sci-fi vibe, it’s a must see.  If you’re a fan of nitro taps, you’ll be right at home.

All in all, great beer, a solid, knowledgeable wait staff and sweet vibe.

Cheers,
Jeromy

Goats, Spring, and Bock Beer

March 20, 2014 by Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club

German BockToday is special my friends.  One of significance, with deep historical roots, and one that will bring some sense of relief to many I’m sure.  Today is National Bock Day, and it also happens to be the 1st day of spring.  Bocks come in many different styles and variations, but they were typically brewed to welcome in the spring season and bid adieu to winter.

This past winter was pretty brutal to many due to some extreme weather sweeping across most of the nation.  There were even some uncommon appearances of the season in some of the southern states.  Remember all those people in Atlanta caught off guard by the winter storm and forced to succumb to its fury, abandoning their cars on the freeway just to get back home?  Well it’s time to put that all behind us now and welcome in this magical time of year.  Flowers bloom, picnics are be planned, the birds start to sing again, bears awake from their hibernation, and Bocks are in their prime.

Bock, what a funny word.  But it’s more than just a funny sounding noun, it actually has some meaning.  To be exact, it’s German for “Billy Goat”.  Thank goodness that has nothing to do with the listed ingredients, but more to do with old world influence.  During medieval times, old German monasteries would brew a strong bock as a source of nutrition during their Lenten fasts.  Others believe it was made with more of a pagan connotation, only being brewed during the sign of the Capricorn goat, hence the name “Bock”.

So whatever your cause, there’s surely a reason to be found to enjoy a nice Bock this spring.  What’s yours?

Cheers!

Odell’s Footprint is a sweet concept well executed

October 16, 2013 by Kris Calef

IMG_1709I love the concept of this beer almost as much as I enjoyed the beer itself.  Odell’s “distribution footprint” is comprised of 10 states and each one of those states made a unique contribution to to the beer resulting in a crafty collective of regional flavors:

  • Colorado – Hops & Barley
  • Arizona – Prickly Pear
  • Idaho – Barley & Hops
  • Kansas – Wheat
  • Minnesota – Wild Rice
  • Missouri – Oak Barrels
  • Nebraska – Corn
  • New Mexico – Green Chilis
  • S. Dakota – Barley & Honey
  • Wyoming – Wheat

Worth trying if you can get your hands on it.

Prost!
Kris
