Pouring a brilliant pale gold beneath a bright white head, Früh Kölsch is a classic expression of Cologne’s signature beer style. The aroma is delicate and inviting, with clean grain and lightly bready malt accompanied by subtle floral hop notes. On the palate, the beer remains light, crisp, and lively, with gentle malt sweetness providing a foundation for its restrained hop character. Its sparkling carbonation contributes additional freshness, keeping the overall impression bright and exceptionally refreshing. The balance here is the key to its considerable drinkability. Neither malt nor hops dominate, allowing the beer’s clean, delicate character to remain front and center before a dry, subtly bitter finish invites another sip. Traditionally, Kölsch is served in a tall, narrow 0.2-liter glass known as a Stange, and FRÜH recommends enjoying its Kölsch at 41–45°F. For pairings, try it with bratwurst, schnitzel, roast chicken, seafood, mild cheeses, or traditional Cologne dishes. Its crispness also makes it an excellent partner for fried foods. Prost!

The story of Cölner Hofbräu Früh begins with Peter Josef Früh, who came from a brewing family in Brühl and established Aposteln-Bräu in Cologne in 1895. In 1904, he opened Cölner Hofbräu Früh near the famous Cologne Cathedral, combining a brewery for top-fermented beer with a traditional brewhouse restaurant. Früh am Dom quickly became a fixture of Cologne’s beer culture, and the family business has now passed through five generations. FRÜH Kölsch itself has been brewed according to Peter Josef Früh’s original recipe since 1904.

As demand grew, production eventually outgrew the original location near the cathedral. Following two years of construction, FRÜH opened a modern brewery in Cologne-Feldkassel in 1987, where its Kölsch is produced today. Despite the expansion, the brewery remains closely associated with Cologne and its distinctive Kölsch culture. FRÜH uses only water, barley malt, and hops in accordance with the German Purity Law and emphasizes a slower approach to fermentation and maturation. The brewery has carried the Slow Brewing quality seal since 2014.
