Kloster Andechs Weissbier Dunkel is a traditional Bavarian dark wheat beer that combines the expressive character of a hefeweizen with deeper malt richness. It pours a cloudy mahogany-brown with a dense, creamy tan head. Aromas are classic and inviting, featuring ripe banana, clove spice, and hints of caramel and toasted bread. On the palate, the beer is smooth and medium-bodied, with flavors of dark wheat malt, subtle cocoa, and light molasses balanced by bright yeast-driven fruit and spice. The carbonation is lively yet soft, helping to lift the richer malt profile while maintaining a refreshing finish. Despite its darker appearance, the beer remains highly drinkable and balanced, with no harsh bitterness. It pairs well with roasted meats, sausages, and soft pretzels, making it a versatile example of a traditional Dunkelweizen.

Kloster Andechs is one of Germany’s most renowned monastic breweries, located atop the “Holy Mountain” (Heiliger Berg) in Andechs, Bavaria, just southwest of Munich. Brewing at the monastery dates back to at least the 15th century, though the Benedictine monks of St. Boniface Abbey in Munich formally established the modern brewery in 1850 after acquiring the site. Since then, Kloster Andechs has operated as a monastery-owned brewery, with all proceeds supporting the Benedictine community’s religious, cultural, and charitable activities.

The brewery is deeply rooted in the long-standing Bavarian monastic brewing tradition, where beer production was historically tied to sustenance, hospitality, and self-sufficiency. Kloster Andechs continues to follow the principles of the German Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot), using only water, malted barley and wheat, hops, and yeast. The brewery sources its water from deep wells beneath the monastery, contributing to the consistency and character of its beers.

Over the centuries, Kloster Andechs has developed a reputation for producing classic Bavarian styles with exceptional quality and precision. Its lineup includes a range of lagers, wheat beers, and stronger specialty brews such as Doppelbocks, all crafted with a focus on balance, drinkability, and traditional flavor profiles. The brewery’s beers are known for their clean fermentation, well-integrated malt character, and adherence to time-honored techniques.

Today, Kloster Andechs remains one of the last independently operated monastery breweries in Germany and a major destination for both pilgrims and beer enthusiasts. Visitors to the monastery experience not only its historic church and scenic setting, but also its famous Bräustüberl, where freshly brewed beers are served alongside traditional Bavarian cuisine. Despite its global recognition, Kloster Andechs continues to embody its original mission—combining faith, craftsmanship, and community through the art of brewing.
