Mackeson XXX Triple Stout is a classic expression of the English Milk Stout tradition, distinguished by its use of lactose to create a rich, creamy texture and gentle residual sweetness. Pouring an almost opaque dark brown beneath a dense tan head, this beer offers an inviting aroma of freshly roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and toasted malt. Subtle impressions of cocoa and charred bread add depth, while the underlying sweetness hints at the smooth character awaiting on the palate. In the flavor, roasted malt takes center stage, delivering notes of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and toasted grain. Lactose provides a velvety mouthfeel and soft sweetness that balances the darker roasted flavors without making the beer excessively sugary. Hints of molasses and brown sugar contribute additional richness, while 38 IBUs provide enough bitterness to maintain balance. At 4.9% ABV, Mackeson delivers the satisfying depth of a traditional stout in an approachable package. For pairings, we'd recommend smoked meats, barbecue ribs, roasted chicken, aged cheddar, or rich chocolate desserts. A slice of chocolate espresso cake would make a particularly decadent match. Cheers!
The story of Mackeson Stout begins in the historic brewing town of Hythe, Kent, England, where the Mackeson family established a brewing tradition dating back to the seventeenth century. In the early twentieth century, Mackeson's Brewery developed a distinctive new stout using lactose, or milk sugar, to create a sweeter, smoother alternative to the more aggressively roasted stouts of the period. First introduced commercially in 1909, Mackeson's Milk Stout became one of Britain's pioneering examples of the style, helping establish a category that would eventually find admirers around the world.
The beer's popularity grew rapidly, and Mackeson licensed its production to other British breweries. In 1929, the business became part of Whitbread, one of England's major brewing companies. Under Whitbread's ownership, Mackeson developed into a nationally recognized brand, supported by memorable advertising and a reputation for its rich, creamy character. Although production at the original Hythe brewery ended in 1968, the Mackeson name continued through a succession of brewing facilities and ownership arrangements.
Today, Mackeson remains an important name in the history of British milk stout, although its production is no longer confined to England. The 4.9% ABV Mackeson XXX Triple Stout featured here has been produced in the United States by Florida Beer Company, preserving the character of the historic British brand through American brewing. This distinction makes Mackeson an interesting example of an internationally established beer whose heritage and production location are not necessarily the same.
