The Alesong Kentucky Kilt has uniqueness all its own. If you look at it from a slightly different perspective, it takes a similar path to existence as Scotch Whisky. It is an alcoholic beverage made with barley malt, as is Scotch Whisky, and matured in bourbon barrels, as very many Scotch Whiskies have been for decades. Kentucky Kilt is a Scotch-style ale, matured in an eclectic mix of bourbon barrels: George Dickel 14-year, Elijah Craig 18-year, and Henry McKenna 10-year. It is an outstanding, amber-colored ale that exhibits aromas of silky vanilla, sweet caramel malt, deeply toasty oak, and rich, velvety smooth bourbon. The same is true on the palate. The different bourbon barrels each add their own nuances and flavorings to the beer without any taking over. Think of their use as seasoning, complementing the liquid, and driving forward the base ale’s inherent flavors. The texture is smooth and clean, with a slight sweetness in the finish, making this a great after dinner drink or nightcap in addition to the recommended pairings.
Alesong has proven to make beers that drink very well upon release without the need for further aging. That shouldn’t deter anyone from cellaring a few Kentucky Kilts for 3-5 years to see what the outcome might be. Alesong recommends pairing Kentucky Kilt with grilled peaches topped with honey mascarpone, lemon herb barbequed pork chops, and brown sugar butterscotch pecan cookies. Cheers!
