Next in this exceptional lineup of limited releases from Brouwerij De Ranke is the 2022 edition of Grapevine, a Lambic beer with 25% Trebbiano d’Abbruzzo grapes. These grapes were harvested in Italy in 2021 then blended with De Ranke’s Lambic creating a wine-like beer that explores the boundaries between beer and wine. The Italian wine region, Trebbiano d’Abbruzzo DOC, is the only DOC in Abbruzzo that focuses strictly on white wine production. When used in winemaking, the grapes produce fresh and fruity wines that typically have a bright acidity and a floral bouquet.

Grapevine pours a bright hazy pale amber-orange with a beautiful white foam head. As the head dissipates, and with each sip, there is a nice ring of lacing left behind. The initial aromas of the Trebbiano d’Abbruzzo grapes flow from the glass with ease consisting of lemon/lime, hints of tangerine, pale green apple, and notes of pineapple. A blanket of fruit blossoms envelops the base Lambic beer which adds light toasty malt notes and a great expression of wild yeasts and cultures. The aromas continue with citrus zest and earth tones joined by underripe apricot, yellow plum, and a light herbal/grassy hop presence.

On the palate we were treated by this Rare Beer Club exclusive to a wide range of flavors from the first sip to the last. The Trebbiano d’Abbruzzo grapes lead the way with a fine wine-like approach. “Is this beer?” we asked ourselves, or “is this wine with a malt backbone?” Our first sips confirmed that what we were drinking was in fact beer, but the vinous qualities shined through at first, with bright wine-like acidity, fresh lemon/lime citrus zest, hints of tangerine, and tart apricot and yellow plum. The flavors continued with the Lambic notes of lightly toasted malt, a welcome hoppy bitterness displaying flavors of light field herbs, and fine layers of sour fruit. Grapevine has a light to medium bodied mouthfeel with highly carbonated mousse, and a lingering dry and tart finish. A deliciously refreshing and mouthwatering beer.

We recommend drinking the Grapevine now, but it can be aged for an additional 2-3 years if so desired. De Ranke Grapevine pairs well with the same things one would pair Trebbiano d’Abbruzzo wine – seafood pasta and risotto, grilled fresh fish, and roasted vegetable medley.
