Dopplesticke beers don’t often cross our tasting table here at the Rare Beer Club. The 2017 Tailslide makes us hope for more. Brewed in the style of an old-world double altbier plus the use of bourbon and brandy barrels for aging, this special brew is given its own unique sense of style and character.

The 2017 Tailslide pours a deep opaque brown with a small, but lasting, pale brown head, with a bit of lacing left on the glass after each sip. The aromas we first encounter are toasted brown sugar, salted caramel, and oak char. There is also a deep toffee aroma accented by hints of bourbon and brandy from the barrel aging. Nutty and fruity aromas follow with dried dates and toasted nuts coming through. As we swirl our glasses, aromas of raisins, dried cherries, and vanilla appear. A healthy dose of vinous aromas are present throughout and carry with them warm baking spice and molasses esters.

Our first sip of the 2017 Tailslide confirms what our sense of smell revealed in a more pronounced fashion. The bourbon and brandy barrels add warmth to the palate as we savor the toasted brown sugar and sweet salted caramel. There’s a bit of wood tannin and barrel char bitterness to go with the toasty toffee and chewy dried dates, with a hint of bosc pear. There’s a savory aspect to the flavors as well, reminiscent of toasted Brazil nuts. But let’s not kid ourselves, the star of the show is the malt aroma and flavor that is rich and luxurious on the palate with a round mouthfeel and velvety texture. The maltiness goes beyond being just a backbone and carries the flavor and aromas from start to finish. The body is full with a fine bubbled mousse that forms on the palate. The finish is long and clingy, but dries out a bit towards the end in contrast to what we expected upon first sip. A very satisfying experience.

Further aging is achievable for the 2017 Tailslide because of the 12.6% abv, but not necessary as the sample we tasted has already matured gracefully. We recommend pairing the 2017 Tailslide with rich beef stew, roasted fowl, or Santa Maria-style grilled tri-tip. For dessert, nothing short of Caramel Pecan Pie will do.
