Introduced in 2008 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Gouden Carolus Cuvée van de Keizer Imperial Dark, Gouden Carolus Imperial Blond is an imposing yet surprisingly refreshing strong golden ale. It pours a brilliant yellow-gold and offers a rich, fruity aroma accented by herbal and spicy notes. Het Anker brews the beer with multiple varieties of malt and three spices, while East Kent Golding hops provide balancing bitterness. The brewery identifies impressions of orange, cumin, chamomile, and coriander within its aromatic profile.

On the palate, expect a full-bodied combination of ripe fruit, malt richness, herbs, and gentle spice. Despite its formidable 10% ABV, the beer maintains a refreshing quality, with its 17 EBU of bitterness helping provide structure and balance. High fermentation followed by three weeks of lagering contributes to its developed character, while the substantial malt bill—measured at 22° Plato—provides the foundation for its considerable body and strength. Het Anker recommends serving it at approximately 45–46°F (7–8°C), allowing its complex fruit and spice character to remain lively and expressive.

Het Anker gives the 75 cl bottle a shelf life of three years, making Imperial Blond suitable for some short-term cellaring. Over time, its fresh fruit and spice character may soften while its rich malt and warming alcohol become more integrated, though the brewery does not publish a specific aging progression. For the liveliest expression of its fruity, herbal character, there is no need to wait—it can be enjoyed immediately.

For food pairings, Het Anker specifically recommends game, cheese, and dessert. Its combination of strength, fruit, spice, and carbonation can complement roasted game birds or other richly flavored meats, while its malt depth works well with robust cheeses. For dessert, consider fruit-based pastries, bread pudding, or lightly spiced cakes that can echo the beer’s fruity and herbal complexity without overwhelming it.

The brewing heritage of Het Anker’s historic site in Mechelen’s Groot Begijnhof reaches back centuries. Beer was already being brewed there in 1471, when Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, granted an exemption from excise duties and taxes on beer brewed for the beguines and their officers. The modern family-brewing story began in 1872, when the Van Breedam family, already involved in distilling, acquired the brewery. The family focused increasingly on specialty beers and embraced new technology, beginning with the installation of a steam boiler and later adding modern malting and bottling equipment.

Het Anker entered another important era in the late 1950s, when Charles Van Breedam ended lager production to concentrate exclusively on traditional specialty beers. From 1962 to 1990, Michel Van Breedam developed Gouden Carolus into the brewery’s flagship range, building its reputation in Belgium and abroad. Charles Leclef took the helm in 1990, representing the fifth generation and overseeing further development of the brewery, distillery, restaurant, and brewery hotel. Het Anker also expanded into whisky production, creating Gouden Carolus Single Malt from the malt mash of Gouden Carolus Tripel.

In 2025, Het Anker began a new chapter following its acquisition by Brouwerij Huyghe, the Belgian brewery best known for Delirium. Het Anker continues to emphasize its historic Mechelen identity, traditional craftsmanship, and Gouden Carolus range while benefiting from Huyghe’s international network. Today, the historic site combines a working brewery and distillery with a brasserie and brewery hotel, preserving centuries of brewing heritage while continuing to develop new specialty beers and whiskies.
