A beautiful, rich tan head rests gracefully atop a nut-brown and viscous body, immediately catching the eye and signaling the depth within this unique interpretation of the traditional Eisbock. Eisbock is a malty lager style that achieves a higher alcohol by volume (ABV) through a method where the beer is partially frozen and the resulting ice is removed, concentrating the flavors and alcohol. What sets Jopen’s “4-Granen” (four grains) version apart is the addition of oats and rye to the typical malt bill of barley and wheat, adding layers of complexity and texture.
On the nose, you’re welcomed by luxurious aromas of chocolate, overripe plums, and dark raisins, which unfold into deeper, richer scents of complex malt, cocoa, and subtle spice. As the aroma evolves, a touch of roast and even a faint hint of earthy mustiness creeps in, rounding out the olfactory experience.
When you take your first sip, the dominant sensation is the bold roastiness and smoky malt character, which immediately evokes memories of a robust imperial porter. Notably, the malt is dry and toasty rather than sweet, leaning into a more savory profile. As the flavor develops on the palate, rich dark chocolate and velvety cocoa flavors emerge, accompanied by underlying notes of dried fruits and an intriguing hint of spice. The finish is clean, dry, and notably bitter, adding a refined edge to the experience.
This beer offers an intriguing and unexpected twist on the Eisbock tradition. While it has the flavor depth and mouthfeel reminiscent of a high-gravity imperial stout or porter, it maintains its lager roots, giving it a smoother, crisper texture. It’s a beer that demands to be seen, smelled, and tasted to fully grasp its unique and powerful presence.
