Tommyknocker Pick Axe IPA

Tommyknocker Brewery - Pick Axe IPA

Tommyknocker Brewery - Pick Axe IPA

  • Style: American IPA
  • ABV: 6.2%
  • Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 55
  • Serving Temperature: 45-50°F
  • Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
  • Hops: Chinook, Summit, Willamette, Mt. Hood, Nugget
  • Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Carastan, Crystal 75
  • Country: United States

Pick Axe cuts a fine figure in the glass, presenting a medium amber hue with good clarity and plenty of persistent dense foam that leaves lots of lace as it recedes. The aroma declares “I am an IPA” in no uncertain terms with big, sweetly floral and fruity notes with a citric and pine edge. Beneath all that hoppy goodness is a nice undercurrent of toasty, caramel malt. In the mouth the 55 IBUs shine through upfront with firm bitterness while...

Sand Creek Brewing Company - Oscar’s Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

  • Style: Oatmeal Stout
  • ABV: 4.0%
  • Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 30
  • Serving Temperature: 50-55°F
  • Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
  • Hops: Kent Goldings
  • Malts: Pale, Wheat, Flaked Oats, Chocolate, Roasted Barley
  • Country: United States

A World Beer Cup gold medal winner for brewmaster Todd Krueger in 2000, this oatmeal stout pours a very dark, almost black, color capped by a rich brown crop of foam. There’s a creamy impression on the nose along with roasty-toasty malts, big mocha coffee notes, dark chocolate, and the distinct aroma of oats. These oats contribute a wonderful, creamy roundness on the palate (which is why they’re used). Look for flavors of roasted grain with a...

Darwin Brewery Flag Porter

Darwin Brewery Ltd. - Flag Porter

Darwin Brewery Ltd. - Flag Porter

  • Style: English Porter
  • ABV: 5.0%
  • Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
  • Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass
  • Country: England

Salvaging 163-year-old yeast that has been sitting at the bottom of a bottle—sitting at the bottom of the English Channel—now that's quite a chore. Thankfully, the makers of this fine brew did their homework in order to come up with this authentic ale. Flag Porter was modeled on the brown porter style prevalent at the turn of the nineteenth century rather than the richly roasted Victorian porters that developed later. This would have been more ...

Birra Amiata Contessa

Birra Amiata - Contessa

Birra Amiata - Contessa

  • Style: Italian Pale Ale
  • ABV: 7.5%
  • Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
  • Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Pint Glass
  • Country: Italy

Contessa pours a brilliantly clear, pale honey-orange color topped by vibrant white foam that sticks around for the duration: tightly formed head; beautiful crystalline pour. We’ll happily take haze in our hefeweizens (and anything else we can find on the bottle-conditioned front, for the most part), but there’s something striking about crystal-clear IPA with precise head formation. You can tell when your mouth waters. (That said: Do note...

Tommyknocker Maple Nut Brown

Tommyknocker Brewery - Maple Nut Brown

Tommyknocker Brewery - Maple Nut Brown

  • Style: American Brown Ale
  • ABV: 4.5%
  • Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 20
  • Serving Temperature: 47-52°F
  • Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
  • Hops: Perle, Willamette
  • Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Crystal 75 & 150, Carapils, Chocolate
  • Country: United States

Brewed with a bit of maple syrup to add an interesting extra dimension, this nut brown ale pours a rich, deep hue that’s actually quite red when held to the light. This is an attractive beer – we’re off to a good start. On the nose, the malts are prominent, with a moderate bready character and big caramelized malt notes that lend a distinctly sweet impression. Look for a mild toasty and nutty quality, along with a subtle but distinct hint ...

Sand Creek English Style Special Ale

Sand Creek Brewing Company - English Style Special Ale

Sand Creek Brewing Company - English Style Special Ale

  • Style: English Brown Ale
  • ABV: ~5%
  • Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 25
  • Serving Temperature: 45-50°F
  • Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
  • Hops: Cascade, Tettnang, Cluster
  • Malts: Pale, Caramel 10-40, Special Roast, Victory
  • Country: United States

Expect a dark reddish amber color on the pour, topped with plenty of pale foam which drops some lace as you drain the glass. We found the aromas fairly complex, with a core of mildly bready caramel malts, along with some hints of toffee. There’s a bit of a light juicy impression as well, with hops adding a fairly complex mélange of spicy, floral, earthy, and almost exotic herbal (think incense) notes. We got a bit of straw or hay, too.

Brasserie Lefèbvre Floreffe Triple

Brasserie Lefèbvre - Floreffe Triple

Brasserie Lefèbvre - Floreffe Triple

  • Style: Belgian Triple
  • ABV: 7.5%
  • Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
  • Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, Chalice
  • Country: Belgium

The Belgian triple style (also spelled ‘tripel’ or sometimes ‘trippel’) is so named because these beers are brewed with significantly more malt than an abbey brewery’s more simple offerings. This version is brewed to an old recipe created by the monks of the Abbaye de Floreffe and pours a beautiful golden-coppery color with a voluminous, pillowy head; retention is excellent. Notice a slight haze, which is expected in bottle-conditioned beers...

Prairie Artisan Ales - Prairie Noir

Prairie Artisan Ales - Prairie Noir

  • Style: Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout
  • ABV: 9.0%
  • Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
  • Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Tulip
  • Country: United States

Even from the initial pour, one gets the inkling that there’s something special going on here. There’s the slight viscosity and that deep, cola-brown color, for sure: things that hearken to the expectations and hoped-for density of great imperial stouts. But a dark-tan head appears as well, and ultimately sticks around for the duration: darker tan in color, with such miniscule bubbles as to appear a single entity, plus glistening lacing that...
