Portland, OR – 18th annual Holiday Ale Festival

“The winter season holds many gifts for beer lovers in the form of big, bold ales designed to fend off the cold chill of a long winter’s night. Each year, the Holiday Ale Festival annually gathers up dozens of these winter warmers for a joyous five-day celebration. As a result, this quintessential Portland event has earned a reputation as the premier winter beer tasting venue on the West Coast. Held in the heart of downtown Portland, the Holiday Ale Festival keeps attendees warm and dry under a large clear top tent that covers Pioneer Courthouse Square while allowing for views of the city lights. Gas heaters create a cozy ambience under the boughs of one of the region’s largest decorated Christmas trees. More than 50 potent winter ales are featured at this year’s event, all of which are created specifically to bring warmth and cheer to the holiday season. These aren’t beers you’ll find in the supermarket – our brewers have put together special recipes just for the Holiday Ale Festival. From Belgians and Barleywines to Stouts and Sours, these beers are rich, robust and full of complex flavors. From December 3rd through December 7th, 2014, come hoist a pint and toast to the spirits of the season. We look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Ale Festival…Cheers!”

Essen, Belgium – Christmas Beer Festival

“O.B.E.R. (Objective Beer tasters Essen Region) organizes its Christmas Beer Festival every year. For two days visitors can taste about 170 Belgian Christmas and winter beers. To let you judge the different brews at best, we use 15 cl tasting glasses. A glass can be obtained for 3 Euro, but if you return it to us when you leave, you get a full refund. However, lots of glasses are kept as souvenirs. Our beer list is regarded as one of the best in the world, with several scoops and interesting gems combined with world classics. This year we’ll serve about 150-170 different bottled beers to taste, including 18 or 20 on draught. Hot served Gluhkriek will of course still be available as well. At last year’s festival about 3000 thirsty Christmas-beer-lovers came to the festival in Essen. And not only from Belgium! We have a very international audience coming from all over the world, counting 37 countries and 18 American States last year! To deal with the growth of the festival and to shorten the queue outside we’ll arrange a “fast lane” (snelkassa) where you can buy a set with a glass, a booklet with tasting notes and 9 tokens for 20€ (preferably exact change). If you still have your glass from previous years, don’t need a booklet or want less tokens you stil can go to the normal desk and buy each separately. Also we have made a deal with the landlord of the pub next to the hall. There will be 100 extra seats provided, as well as a couple of simple dishes for a fair price. Our beefstew, cheeses, sausage and soup will still be present in our own kitchen. (So as usual: please do NOT take your own food into the hall or in the café). At the pub will be at least 3 top Christmas Beers on draught too.”
